The Art of Bälans...The British Military Fitness Statuette

There is a small dark figure on the display shelf in the office at Bälans. This is statuette was the first of its kind and was presented to Joakim by the British Military Fitness area manager JJ Mackay on behalf of all the staff and members of BMF Perth. The Provost was in attendance at the presentation as BMF Perth planted a lime tree on the North Inch for which Joakim has organised the fundraising

Joakim was the Park Manager at BMF Perth for 10 years as a part time change of pace from the more relaxed atmosphere of teaching Pilates and offering Massage. He stepped down as Park Manager when his daughter Mariella was born, and continued to enjoy teaching these fast paced outdoor fitness classes as a class Instructor until baby Alben came along suddenly in November.

The statuette depicts a determined BMF instructor ascending against a strong headwind, capturing the attitude with which these classes are taught. BMF Instructors all have a Military background and foster leadership, teamwork, motivational skills learned during their service. The conditions which the North Inch throws at BMF classes can be quite challenging, but a good Instructor makes the sessions rewarding and fun. Joakim recalls teaching classes in -19 degrees, howling horizontal rain, and the most glorious Perthshire sunshine.

British Military Fitness taught Joakim a lot, sending him on training and jobs all over the UK, teaching at a fitness retreat on Fuerte Ventura and making him a better Pilates teacher too. The London based company put Joakim forward for the UK Active Flame Awards in 2014 and he returned from Down South an Award Winner. BMF also introduced Joakim to his wife Louise. All in all, BMF has been a part-time gig which has had a big impact on Joakim and Bälans.
